Coming Home to Nowhere

“Daughter from Danang,” a well acclaimed and Oscar-nominated documentary, followed the journey of Heidi Bob, born to a Vietnamese mother and an American serviceman during the Vietnam War, to see her mother for the first time ever since she left Vietnam at the age of seven. While I personally found the documentary emotionally engaging and thought-provoking in its exploration of the issue of identity and cultural connection, I wonder when the other side of this story about Amerasians will be told. And who would listen?

I want to talk about the experience of approximately 20,000 fellows who also shared the same Amerasian-by-birth background with our character Heidi, but unfortunately never had the full opportunity to search for their true identity and social acceptance. The story of . . . Amerasians -- “Children of the Dust.”

Vietnamese Amerasians, commonly referred to as Amerasians, are children of America's Viet Nam War. Some were brought over to America in the final days of the war as part of “Operation Babylift.” Although this program was strongly criticized later by the American public as a culturally insensitive approach toward Amerasians, it rescued those children like Heidi from suffering a troubled childhood if they had ever grown up in Vietnam.

Tony Nguyen is an American citizen who doesn’t want to turn his back on those he feels have been left behind in his home land of Vietnam.

“It’s important to me because it’s not our fault that we were born into this life,” Nguyen said. “A lot of Amerasians have been treated like refugees but should be treated like citizens because of who our fathers are.”

Nguyen, 36, said there are more than 30,000 ‘Con Lai’ (Amerasians in Vietnamese) in this country but there are still more in Vietnam that should be transported over to this country. Those who know Nguyen knows he is devotedly serious about the issue.

“He’s very dedicated and passionate about this,” said Wayne Long, veteran services officer for Hamilton County.

U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) – a longtime supporter of the Amerasian cause – introduced the bill Oct. 30 and said a change is in order.

Long Tùng đã trình bày với 2 ông dựa theo chương trình HR-4007 hai thượng nghị sĩ hứa sẽ quan tâm đến cái dự luật HR-4007 và sẽ làm việc trực tiếp với Long Tùng. Hai ông đã  lắng nghe nghe Long Tùng  trình bày rất là chú tâm và hai ông đã đọc xong tin về ACE Lai trên tờ báo Hamilton Indiana daily times. Thượng nghị sĩ Kenley bận rộn nên chia tay trướ trao danh thiếp cho Long Tùng bảo Long Tùng phải tiếp tục giũ liên lạc. Thượng nghị sĩ Mike Delph và Long Tùng chụp hìcnh lưu niệm.

Long Tùng đang nghiên cứu và đàm pháng một bộ hồ sơ (84 trang) từ văn phòng U.S kế toán tài chánh và bộ giáo dục ở Washington DC với hai bộ cơ quan yễm trợ để nài xin giải quyết lại cho anh chị em Con Lai trong nước cũng như ngoài nước. Có tin gì mới sẽ đưa lên báo cáo cho ACE Con Lai mình biết! Nhưng ACE Lai nào có ý kiến gi vui lòng bấm vào mục Liên Lạc và viết thư về đễ Long Tùng có thể học hỏi và đem ý kiến của ACE đến chia sẽ với những người nhân viên làm việc cho Con Lai mình ở Washington DC.
